Intro: For this wine dinner I decided to make a three-course meal and pair it with three wines, a Rose (Fleurs D'Eau) for the Appetizer. A Full-bodied Red (Ojos del Salado) for the Main Course and a Zinfandel (Bogle Family Vineyards) wine for the dessert.
Appetizer: The appetizer consists of a spring-leaf Salad with Cucumber and Carrots and a balsamic, lime salt glaze. This should pair well with the Rose wine as it should have an acidity similar to the Rose.
The wine had a smooth taste of green apple, it was acidic and had a really smooth finish. The bubbles were not as strong, but you could still tell it was sparkling. When paired with the food the acidity died down but it made the food taste worse. The wine made the taste of cucumber and carrots overwhelm the balsamic and lime glaze, It made the salad taste like eating grass. I Would recommend the wine but not the pairing.
Main Course: The main course is a Pan Seared Skirt Steak, basted with Garlic and Rosemary Butter, accompanied by french fries. The Fattyness of the Skirt Steak should complement well with the tannic Full-bodied Red wine.
The Wine had a fruity aroma, and the taste had notes of cherry. It was smooth and soft, it wasn't either acidic or tannic but it had a dry finish. With the food, the wine was like a palate cleanser, the fattiness and grease of the steak were balanced with the wine, The wine allowed the rosemary and garlic flavors to flourish. It was a really good pairing. I would recommend the wine and the pairing.
Dessert: The dessert is a warm chocolate chip cookie topped with Cookies and Cream ice cream. This should pair well with the Zinfandel wine as it is a sweet wine.
The wine had bitter aroma, probably from cramberries, The wine was really sweet, it was not acidic but it was tannic, it had a very dry finish that leaves the mouth watering. With food the sweetness of the cookie and icecream calm down the tannic feeling. The coldness of the icecream also helps to balance the mouth feeling left when drinking the wine. I would recommend the pairing but I would not recommend this wine.
Conclusion:
Overall all the wines were really good by themselves except for the zinfandel, The Apetizer pairing was probably the worst one, The main course pairing was the most balanced one, and the dessert pairing was the best one. I personally liked the Rose wine by itself more than in the pairing and on the other hand I personally liked the paring of the Zinfandel more than the wine itself.
